"The One" is a pop song written by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira for her first English language album Laundry Service (2001). The track was produced by Shakira, and was released as the fifth single from the album in 2003. It was released in many European countries, but not in the United States. Epic wanted to release "The One" in the United States, but due to the failure and flop of Shakira's previous single "Objection (Tango)" and that it was doing below average, Epic scrapped those plans. However in the United States "The One" was able to make the TRL countdown, and it peaked at #3. In other countries, it wasn't quite a hit, but it peaked moderately.

Song information

"The One" was written by Shakira and Glen Ballard. This song is about Shakira's lonely love, and her expression and thanks for the love that has been given to her. Though the song itself was an extremely popular song, and many people were 'touched' by it, it did not fare well chart-wise. Shakira has never performed this live at any shows except for her 2002-2003 Tour of the Mongoose, when the single was released around the time.

Music video

The music video for "The One" has a very basic plot. Shakira is walking through a city, wearing a red coat, where she sees all the people with their lovers/partners loving and hugging each other, while she is alone. She therefore walks through the rain, hoping the find someone who will love her forever. While she walks through the rain, crying hard, she sees an old couple, a mother with her son, a police attack with an old woman, while on the contrary she is alone. The music video ends with her, drenched by the rain, facing the sky.

A similar video was made for Akon for his song "Lonely".

Charts

Because "Objection (Tango)" did not fare very well, peaking at only #55 in the US Billboard Hot 100, Epic Records scraped off the plans of releasing The One in the U.S. However, it was released in most parts of Europe, and other countries such as Australia. It did moderately well in European countries, such as Portugal where it peaked at #5. In Australia it peaked at #16, where it stayed around that spot until it finally dropped out of the chart. In the United World Chart, however, it only peaked at #29. Though it was favortized by many, commercially it did not fare well.
